I was introduced to Joe Biel way back in 1998 or 1999. Just prior to that, in 1996, he had started a part-time mail-order business out of his bedroom in Cleveland, Ohio. This mail order business eventually became Microcosm Publishing, an independent publisher and distributor.

During the past 20+ years, Microcosm has relocated to Portland and grew significantly with countless ups and downs and changes in the way books are sold and consumed.

Then in his 30s, my guest was diagnosed with Autism. Through all of this, he’s learned a lot of what to do and what not to do, so he put it down in a book called Good Trouble: Building a Successful Life and Business with Asperger’s.

In this conversation, we discuss what it means to grow up in punk rock, why you should plan forward, and understanding what the emotional payoff is for your customers.

Now, let’s hack…
