My guest today, Adii Pienaar is an impulsive writer, family man, and founder of three companies with two successful exits under his belt.
Back in 2007, and while still in college, he founded what would become WooCommerce. After six years of growing the company, he exited to start something new and exciting.
The following year, he started Conversio. He grew this company and team until August 2019 when the company was acquired by Campaign Monitor.
It was through his experience in building Conversio that he stumbled onto this idea of creating a business that could be life – and family – first. This idea became the foundation for his brand new book called Life Profitability: The New Measure of Entrepreneurial Success.
Now, let’s hack…
Adii Pienaar.
Highlights from the interview
- [06:47]: Adii has found that putting in work is much more appealing when it’s for yourself, and toward your own goals. While he often works long hours these days, he’s always disliked the idea of working just for the sake of working.
- [12:18]: WooCommerce grew massively, very very fast, presenting a number of unique challenges. Adii describes it as “blitz scaling.” In retrospect, he feels that there were some things he could have done better if he had the experience he does now.
- [19:48]: Adii discusses the topic of making a decision to exit one’s business. At one point, he and his co-owners found that they had very different ideas about what direction the business should go. Adii ended up beginning to feel like he wanted to challenge himself further, in ways he couldn’t quite do within that business. It was then that he decided to make an exit, and find himself newer and greater challenges to conquer.
